I couldn’t have asked for a better Father’s Day yesterday. It was as much about Amelia as it was about me and my father-in-law who joined us for the day. Amelia, as she was going down for the evening had “the best day ever!”
Grilling and eating outside while watching my daughter play in a $20 inflatable pool we got at Target was all I needed. In the balmy 90 degree Cleveland weather the day offered up was pure heaven for my child. Her joy is medicine for the soul. Surprise ice cream cake after chronic playful complaining about wanting cake topped off the day for everyone.
I have a date this morning after Lindsay goes off to work. It has been planned since late last week and today is the big day! Amelia likes to call them dates when it is just her and I doing something special. For some unknown reason she thinks going out for pancakes at Burger King is one of the most exciting things that can ever happen. We did it once last year to give Lindsay some quiet time and she hasn’t stopped talking about it since. She is making memories and these are times we will never get back. I’ll take it.
It is the little things that make a good life. Watching my daughter relish in simply being a kid and finding such happiness in what we as adults can so easily take for granted reminds me that life isn’t that bad. I need to find my own little joys every day and be grateful for them. That is the recovery I desire.
